Our leadership structure

The School operates as a collaborative community, with significant academic independence within each theme area to establish transformative activities that complement the work of academic departments and faculties and where ³Ô¹ÏÍø’s approach to convergence science adds clear value.

The Director provides leadership and management for the School of Convergence Science as a flagship initiative of ³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Science for Humanity Strategy. 

Each theme is then led by four Co-Directors, with one acting as the convenor for the theme.

Director of the School - Professor Anthony Bull 

is a leading researcher in interdisciplinary and translational biomedical engineering, with a particular focus on conflict trauma and the musculoskeletal system. An alumnus of ³Ô¹ÏÍø, he is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, a member of the World Council of Biomechanics, and inaugural Chair of Trustees of the BioMedEng Association.

Professor Bull is the immediate past Head of the Department of Bioengineering (2012–2022) and has led or co-led major institutional initiatives across education, research (Centre for Injury Studies), translation (MedTechONE), and infrastructure and philanthropy, including the interdepartmental exchange for engineering undergraduates, and the development and delivery of the Sir Michael Uren Hub.

Meet our Co-Directors

The current Convening Co-Directors are, Professor Alessandra Russo (Human and Artificial Intelligence), Professor Jonathan Eastwood (Space, Security and Telecoms) and Dr Mirabelle Muuls (Sustainability).  

The Co-Directors provide academic leadership for their themes and represent the breadth of expertise across ³Ô¹ÏÍø’s faculties.

Operations Team

The Operations Team is led by Daniela Manca (Director of Operations). Each theme has dedicated staff who are spread across Impact, Relationship, Bid Development, Comms & Events and Admin.
